    Cramped!

Now, now... It has been 3 months plus since I entered VJC, almost a month since the 'O' level results were released. To be frank, I wasn't exactly pleased when I learnt that I had scored 8 points, thanks to A2s in my A. Maths and Chemistry( The unexpected ones since these are my better subjects!). Sure, I have got 4A1s and 4A2s, straight As no doubt, but they have resulted in some restrictions. On the other hand, I do feel that it is a blessing in disguise as well. I feel so much at ease in VJC, and I know that if I had gotten 6 points, I would have banged the wall and applied for RJC, missing out on a world of opportunities(signing up for ASEAN Forum,DramaNite etc)...

Life has been great the past couple of weeks, apart from my hospitalisation. In late February, my directors, Fiona and Audrey from the VJC drama club, had selected me to be part of their ensemble for Fast Cars and Fancy Women, a play to be featured in this year's VJC DramaNite. Until 2 days ago. The directors and cast came together for a first reading of the script. Then, Fiona, if I remembered correctly, said something like "Eddie's here, now for the rest!". That was enough to leave me in shock. I got the role I auditioned for in January! There had been a change in plans and the directors thought that I would have been a better candidate to portray Eddie's personality.

Basically, Fast Cars and Fancy Women(FCFW) is a play about materialism, centering around a girl, Stella (played by Andrea), who desires "The Good Life", and another guy, Cheong (played by Ziyang), 'a small town Malaysian boy with a niddle-class background'. So, Cheong likes Stella, but Stella is not satisifed with Cheong's status. She wants 'a man with a fast car and life in the fast lane', while Cheong only wants her. In the end, both get their desires, but they paid a price in return.

Now, you might question: Then where on earth is Eddie and why am I so excited about playing him? Eddie Goodtime is a flamboyant hypocrite who eggs the 2 of them into attaining thier desires. Eddie is existent and at the same time, non- existent. Essentially, Eddie is the "Control Panel" in FCFW , so he is the one who drives change with his incessant questioning of both Stella's and Cheong's satisfaction towards their lives. Sounds interesting?

However, I still need to work on being more entertaining. Today's rehearsal was a great time to reveal my weaknesses, so that I know exactly what I should be focussing on. Hopefully, I would be more prepared by the next rehearsal( and that my ulcers go off by then).

    My script

Off the record, there were two incidents which left a pretty deep impression on my mind today.

First of which was part of our rehearsal. There is one portion where Eddie is supposed to make comparisons between Stella and 'his friends domiciled in Geylang', so Cheong is supposed to be angry and grab Eddie by the collar. It was just the first time and Ziyang forcefully grabbed my collar, lifting me up and forcing me to tiptoe lest my uniform tore apart. Everyone broke out into laughter beacuase it was unexpected. We repeated that once again and the same thing happened, drawing a second round from not just from the rest, but from me as well! Hahax, sheer enthusiasm!

The second takes on a more serious note. For the record, I seldom spoke to Andrea unless it was necessary during the rehearsals. So, after today's rehearsal, I gave Mummy a call so that she could pick me up, of which the conversation went like this: 'Hello...Mi...It's over...Yup...' Andrea smiled at me while packing up and putting on her shoes, so I did the same back to her. Frankly, at that time, I was thinking: "Is answering a phone call so funny that she has to beam at me?" Hahax, read on!

Andrea: You call your Mum 'Mi'?

Me: Yup, it's kind of a habit already, acquired since young. Something I can't change.

Andrea: I call my mum 'Mi' too, instead of the more usual 'Mum', 'Mummy' or 'Ma'

Me: and 'Dad', 'Daddy', 'Father' or 'Pa'

    Andrea: You call your Dad

    Both: 'Di' as well

    Andrea: Same here!

Me: Hahax! Sounds childish, but it comes out naturally!

It's great to actually know that there's something in common between us, at least to know that there's someone who addresses parents in the same, unconventional way as I do! Hurray to calling 'Mi's and 'Di's!

And oh, not to mention this is the second time this year that I have made the same blooper: Mistaking an IP2 for someone of a different level. It happened in January during one OG outing, where I mistook my OGL, Michelle, to be my senior. The same thing happened today when I mistook Andrea as a J1. Seriously now, if this goes on, I think I better register myself in a kindergarten that teaches me how to tell the difference between an old man and a teenager, so that as I go on to higher levels, I would be able to tell the difference between a junior, peer and senior soon enough!

    Till then!
