Tokyo, 111208 - Day One : The Beginning

I didn't manage to get much sleep on the plane as it was too bumpy and uncomfortable, but I'm glad that I didn't. Why? That's becuse I could catch the sunrise, and beautiful it was indeed. We arrived at Narita International Airport at 7.00am. My oh my, the walk to Customs and Immigration from the plane was a really long one. It took 15 minutes just for me to walk there...Gosh...I hate the walking part.
The bus ride to Waseda, Shinju-ku was approximately 2 hours long. Hahax but the only thing I had thought of doing was being trigger happy, so I left my DSLR on and started snapping. Some of the pictures were actually very nice, so I shall just upload them and talk no more, for a picture is worth more than a thousand words.
We reached the Rihga Royal Hotel in Waseda, Shinju-ku at about 10am. At first, we thought that we would be given a slight reprieve from the exhausting bus ride, but it was not to be. The stop at the hotel was only meant for our luggages, so we had to wait till approximately 8pm before we could really take a rest. First on the itinerary was an introduction by Tanaka-san, followed by lunch at the student cafeteria and the opening ceremony at Waseda University.
The climax of the opening ceremony was actually very hilarious. After the opening address by the Dean of Waseda University, Prof. Paul Snowden, the cheerleaders of Waseda University came on stage and performed signature cheers that involved extremely funny poses by the guys!! Hahax it's so different from the kind of cheers we get in Singapore. Shi Wei has the full video for one of the cheers, so I will get it from him and upload it soon. After the opening ceremony, we took a delegation photo with the cheerleaders. This one didn't have any funny poses though, except maybe Estee who looked really enthusiastic.
The model lecture on the UN charter was actually quite appealing to me at first, since I'm pretty interested in such stuff. But the professor was pretty boring, spouting out all the jargon with no intention of juicing up the lecture so that it could have been more interesting. As such, I was practically dozing off and playing my iPhone under the table while he rattled on and on, until the last 30 minutes or so. I noticed that Prof. Bacon was staring in my direction, so I felt a bit embarrassed and started listening. Hahax funny thing was, when he started talking about the practical side of the UN Charter, I was so engaged with the topic of the Iraq War and even answered most of his questions. Hahax lesson number one- always talk about the practical side of stuff.
We then left Waseda University for the Speeches and Q&A session at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in downtown Shinju-ku. There were the powerhouses speaking in Japanese and some who just spoke in English. I almost fell asleep during the speeches and had to literally use my fingers to prod open my eyelids. But one thing was for sure. I was still listening okie! And boy, parliamentarians really deserve to be who they are. We were addressed by the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs in Japan, Mr. Nobuhide Minorikawa. There were a couple of questions that he handled with ease, but if you listened closely enough, he never answered the questions posed. It was like hitting every other point on the dart board except the bull's eye. Hahax but I think he managed to carry it off though. Kudos anyway :) Kenickie was pretty impressive with his Japanese speech, but he seemed a little nervous! Anyways, well done Kenickie! (Psst..this one has the VM smiling very happily during your speech!)

I guess the best part of Day One was the free and easy segment, where we went to Aqua City in Odaiba to try out the ramen in the Ramen Museum. Ridiculously, I picked something extremely expected- Hakata Ramen! Hahax I looked around and didn't really find the rest very appealing, so I just settled on this store which looked quite good. Until I realised that what I had ordered was actually Hakata Ramen!! I guess I can't deny that it's the best kind of ramen there is!

And who can forget the magnificent Rainbow Bridge? It was very windy out in the open at Aqua City, but thankfully I managed to catch a pretty good shot of the bridge at night.

There was a Coca Cola display right behind me when I was taking a photo of the Rainbow Bridge, and I couldn't help but snapped it down as well :)

Personally, my favourite part of the trip was actually Day 2, for reasons I shall not divulge now so that I can maintain the suspense. So, next up: Tokyo,121208- Day 2: The Day I Nearly Got 'Exchanged' In An Exchange Program!

Be sure to read and tag!

    Till then.
